A hospital corridor

Gary Walker, a solicitor specialising in claims for abused and vulnerable children, has said that the reports of the abuse at Fullerton House in Doncaster is akin to what he has seen when representing those who were abused at Winterbourne View, Whorlton Hall, Mendip House and Edenfield Hospital.

Fullerton House School was a specialist home for disabled children run by the Helsey Group, that was closed down in July 2022 after concerns were raised by former staff. Before it closed, it had been assessed by Ofsted as “Good”.

A Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel revealed serious failures at Fullerton House as well as Wilsic Hall and Wheatley House (two other local children’s homes operated by the Helsey Group).

The reports show that there was an extremely concerning culture

The reports show that there was an extremely concerning culture that involved physical abuse and violence, neglect, emotional abuse and sexual harm. There were also concerns over the use of medication and an over-use of restraints.

The Panel proposed a national review of independent specialist schools that is now underway with Dame Leneham appointed as lead.

South Yorkshire Police have launched Operation Lemur Alpha, an investigation into these reports of abuse. And are making an appeal to anyone that may have further information to come forward.

Gary who has represented many vulnerable children and adults who have experienced abuse in residential placements whether that be care homes or children’s homes said: “The harm that can be caused to these children by such abusive treatment can be significant and the effects of it can stay with them for the rest of their lives. It is vital that these children receive support, stability and a safe place to call home. It is reassuring to see that it seems the Review Panel’s proposal has been acted on and the secretary of state for education has said he is committed to supporting the review. It is vital that lessons are learnt and those affected by what has happened get answers.”
