A doctor has been charged with multiple serious sexual offences involving 38 patients while working at two major hospitals in the West Midlands. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed that the charges relate to incidents alleged to have taken place between 2017 and 2021 at the Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley.
Charges and legal proceedings
Nathaniel Spencer, 38, from Birmingham, faces a range of charges including sexual assault, assault by penetration, and offences involving a child under 13. He has been suspended from practising medicine in the UK while the criminal process continues.
He is due to appear at North Staffordshire Justice Centre in January 2026.
Support for patients and families
Both hospital trusts involved have contacted affected patients and set up helplines for anyone who has concerns about their care. They have emphasised that patient safety remains their highest priority and that they are cooperating fully with the police investigation.
The General Medical Council has also confirmed that its fitness-to-practise investigation is ongoing, and Mr Spencer will remain suspended until criminal proceedings have concluded.
“A distressing and traumatic time”
Gary Walker, Head of Abuse at Enable Law, said:
“I have worked with many patients who have been sexually assaulted by doctors and in hospitals and recognise how important it will be for the hospital and other organisations to provide them with the necessary support through this difficult and traumatic time.
As well as the criminal investigation, there will also need to be a thorough investigation into how these alleged offences were allowed to take place, what lessons can be learned and what changes are needed to reassure all those affected that their children will be safeguarded in the future.”
