We are currently acting on behalf of a number of former patients of Mr Anthony Dixon, a colorectal surgeon recently found guilty of having caused significant harm to patients by a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) panel. Mr Dixon has been predominantly investigated in relation to recommending and performing pelvic mesh surgeries without obtaining proper consent from patients and informing them of alternative options.
Some of our cases relate to a different procedure carried out by the clinician, known as STARR—Stapled Transanal Resection of the Rectum. This surgery is typically used to treat Obstructed Defaecation Syndrome (ODS), a condition that can arise from internal rectal prolapse (also known as intussusception) or rectocoele.
However, serious concerns have emerged about the way Mr Dixon diagnosed and carried out this procedure. In two of our ongoing cases, our independent medical experts have confirmed that STARR surgery was not appropriate, as the patients may not have had rectal prolapse at all as diagnosed. In both cases, the surgery has caused ongoing symptoms, including faecal urgency/incontinence – known complications of the procedure which they were not warned about prior to the surgery. These symptoms have had a major impact on their daily lives.
What’s more troubling is that Mr Dixon did not follow standard practice in diagnosing rectal prolapse. Patients were operated on without undergoing the proper investigations that would typically confirm whether surgery was necessary. We are also investigating other cases where STARR may have been performed without clear justification.
Mr Dixon is back before the Tribunal again with questions arising over his care of 7 former patients. Allegations currently being considered by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal include claims that he created false medical records for several patients after his involvement in their care had ended. These records are said to contain inaccurate information and could have contributed to a pattern of misleading or inappropriate treatment.
