Hundreds of women who served in the British Army have now come forward to say they were sexually abused during medical examinations carried out as part of the recruitment process.
Wiltshire Police are leading a nationwide investigation into allegations of abuse said to have taken place between the 1970s and 2016. The Ministry of Defence has stated it is supporting the inquiry, which is believed to involve medical checks performed by doctors contracted to the Army at the time.
The police have said no suspects have yet been identified, but that alleged offences are believed to have occurred across multiple Army locations. Military police initially received reports but passed responsibility to Wiltshire Police earlier this year due to the growing number of women coming forward.
The Ministry of Defence has described the allegations as “deeply concerning” and has praised the courage of those who have spoken out. They are urging anyone else affected to contact the police.
Gary Walker, head of Enable Law nationally recognised abuse team, says “these reports are deeply concerning and it is vital that there is a thorough investigation both at a criminal level against the individuals responsible for the abuse but also at an organisational level to understand how the abuse was allowed to happen to ensure those who choose to serve the country can do so free from abuse.
I would encourage the Ministry of Defence to make sure there is support available for all those who have experienced abuse whilst in the armed forces.”
