Each year on 10 December, the world observes Human Rights Day, a time to reflect on the fundamental rights that uphold the dignity and freedom of every individual. This year’s theme, ‘Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials’ resonates deeply with our work at Enable Law. Our mission is to support survivors of abuse and ensure their rights are upheld, giving them a voice when institutions fail to protect them.
For the people we support at Enable Law, human rights are not abstract principles. They are the essential protections that ensure safety, respect, and justice – protections that too often fail when abuse is allowed to go unnoticed or unchallenged. Our work is rooted in helping survivors when these everyday essentials have been taken from them.
To mark Human Rights Day this year, our Abuse Team wore blue to help raise awareness of the essential role human rights play in the lives of the people we represent, and to highlight the importance of protecting those rights every day.
Human Rights, our everyday essentials
Human rights are woven into daily life: the right to feel safe, to receive proper care, to have your voice heard, and to live with dignity. When those essentials are denied, the consequences can be life-changing.
Inequality, discrimination and systemic failings continue to prevent many survivors from accessing the protection they are entitled to. Human Rights Day is a reminder that these rights are not optional, they are the foundation of a fair society and must be upheld for everyone, every day.
Supporting survivors through legal expertise
Enable Law specialises in representing people who have suffered abuse—whether physical, psychological, or institutional. We focus on enforcing the human rights enshrined in the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA), particularly:
- Article 3: Protecting individuals from torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment
- Article 5: Safeguarding the right to liberty and security
- Article 6: Ensuring the right to a fair trial
- Article 8: Upholding the right to private and family life
These protections are central to our work, allowing us to hold institutions accountable and secure justice for survivors.
The importance of compassionate legal support
Experiencing abuse, neglect, or violent crime can have long-lasting impacts. Knowing where to turn can feel overwhelming. At Enable Law, our specialist solicitors provide support from the first conversation. We take the time to listen, ensure you feel safe, and guide you through every step. Legal action can offer not just compensation, but a sense of justice, control, and an opportunity to rebuild your life.
Tackling inequality through advocacy
Abuse survivors often face complex inequalities compounded by social stigma, limited resources, and systemic failures. We see first hand how marginalised voices can go unheard. Enable Law works to level the playing field, providing expert legal support to those who might otherwise be denied justice. We hold public bodies and institutions accountable while raising awareness of the legal protections available, empowering others to come forward.
Our work in action
Our team, including Helen Horne, Gary Walker, and Rachel Thain, has a proven track record of securing justice for abuse survivors. Recent cases include:
- Securing damages for a woman unlawfully placed in a care home
- Representing a child whose adoption prospects were disrupted by delays
- Supporting a family after a young person’s death in psychiatric care
- Achieving compensation for long-term neglect, including failure to provide adequate medical treatment
- Ensuring safety for disabled individuals left in unsafe living conditions
- Securing justice for children harmed due to local authority failings in care and placement
Each case highlights the importance of specialist legal intervention to uphold human rights.
Looking forward: a commitment to justice
Human Rights Day reminds us that advancing equality is a continuous commitment. At Enable Law, we pledge to continue fighting for those who have been wronged, working towards a society where abuse is not tolerated and every individual’s dignity is respected.
