A Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) panel has found that consultant pelvic surgeon Dr Anthony Dixon, formerly of North Bristol NHS Trust and Spire Hospital in Bristol, caused significant and avoidable harm to a number of patients over several years. The tribunal’s findings, which followed a detailed examination of cases dating between 2010 and 2016, confirm that Dixon failed to obtain proper informed consent from patients, neglected to consider or offer less invasive treatments, and routinely recommended pelvic mesh implant surgeries prematurely and without adequate consultation.
The tribunal reviewed six specific patient cases but its findings reflect a much broader pattern of concern. An internal review by North Bristol NHS Trust revealed that 203 women suffered harm as a result of unnecessary or inappropriate mesh procedures carried out under Dixon’s care. Although he was suspended in 2017 and dismissed from his NHS post in 2019, the implications of his conduct continue to unfold, both clinically and legally. Dixon’s fitness to practise remains under scrutiny, and further hearings are expected.
The human impact of these surgical failings is severe and ongoing. Patients report life-altering complications, including chronic pain, incontinence, nerve damage, bowel dysfunction, and significant psychological trauma.
The tribunal’s judgment represents an important milestone in the pursuit of justice for the hundreds of women affected by Dixon’s actions.
