Mike Bird has taken part in a new documentary which turns the spotlight on convicted amputee vascular surgeon Neil Hopper.
As previously reported, Hopper, who had his own legs removed, was jailed for two years and eight months at Truro Crown Court in September 2025 for insurance fraud and possessing extreme pornography.
An Amputation Obsession: the Monster and the Surgeon, a two-part documentary which is now out Amazon Prime Video, features a series of interviews about Hopper, who lived in Truro.
Cornwall Live reporter Olivier Vergnault shared details of the case while other key information was provided by two other clinicians and a Crown Prosecution Service lawyer.
Truro-based Enable Law partner Mike Bird discussed the case from the patients’ point of view after several of Hopper’s former patients approached Enable Law with concerns about their treatment, following the shocking criminal charges brought against Hopper.
Mike, who has been helping people seek answers after Hopper was jailed, was interviewed after Hopper was struck off the medical register when his fitness to practise was assessed at a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing in May.
Mike was also interviewed by leading journalist Jenny Kleeman for an in-depth article for the Guardian newspaper. He revealed Hopper’s former patients are still asking questions about their own medical treatment and feel their local NHS trust has been “marking its own homework” and should commission an independent review.
A Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (RCHT) spokesperson stated following last year’s court case that the convictions did not relate to Hopper’s “professional conduct” at its hospitals.
