At Enable Law, we know that early access to rehabilitation can make a significant difference to a person’s recovery after a serious injury. That is why we aim to become involved as soon as possible, helping clients access the treatment, support and specialist assistance they need when they need it most.

Our client, Jenny, came to us shortly after a serious road traffic collision that left her with multiple significant injuries. Throughout her recovery journey, we worked alongside rehabilitation professionals and medical experts to help her access specialist treatment and secure the support required to rebuild her independence.

As part of Jenny’s rehabilitation journey, we also had the opportunity to film a video with her, her case manager and members of her rehabilitation team, highlighting the importance of early intervention and specialist support following a catastrophic injury.

The accident

Jenny was driving in Bristol and was waiting at traffic lights before joining the Portway. As the lights changed and she began to move forward, her vehicle was struck by an unmarked blue light vehicle travelling at speed through a red traffic signal. Jenny had no opportunity to avoid the collision and sustained multiple serious injuries as a result.

Following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the driver of the blue light vehicle was found responsible for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Supporting Jenny from the outset

Jenny instructed Enable Law whilst she was still in hospital recovering from her injuries.

Recognising the importance of immediate rehabilitation, Personal Injury Legal Director Tim Jones quickly secured funding for an initial needs assessment. Working with Integrated Case Management, a specialist case manager was appointed to coordinate Jenny’s rehabilitation and ensure she received access to the treatment and support she required.

Funding was obtained for intensive physiotherapy through Hobbs Rehabilitation as soon as Jenny was medically able to begin weight-bearing exercises. Additional treatment, equipment and support were also arranged to assist her recovery at home. The early provision of rehabilitation ensured Jenny was able to focus on her recovery and regain her independence as quickly as possible.

Jenny’s recovery journey

Despite the seriousness of her injuries, Jenny worked tirelessly throughout her rehabilitation.

With access to specialist physiotherapy, ongoing medical treatment and tailored support, she made significant progress and was able to regain much of her mobility. She completed her private physiotherapy programme in February 2025 and continued working independently towards her recovery goals. The journey was not without its challenges, but Jenny remained determined throughout. During this period she also married her long-term partner, whose support played an important role in her recovery.

Speaking in the video we filmed during her rehabilitation journey, Jenny reflected on the impact that early intervention had on her recovery and the difference timely access to specialist treatment made during the months following the accident.

Expert evidence

To understand the full impact of Jenny’s injuries and ensure her future needs were properly assessed, we obtained evidence from experts in orthopaedic surgery, urology, care and occupational therapy, and accommodation.

The medical evidence confirmed that while Jenny had achieved an excellent recovery, she would continue to live with some lasting effects of her injuries. Experts identified ongoing mobility difficulties, chronic symptoms, future treatment needs and an increased risk of developing further orthopaedic problems later in life. Evidence was also obtained regarding her continuing rehabilitation requirements, equipment needs, future care and assistance, accommodation requirements and the impact the accident had on her employment prospects.

The expert evidence ensured that all aspects of Jenny’s claim were properly valued and reflected her long-term needs.

Settlement

Once the expert evidence had been gathered, discussions took place with the defendant’s representatives to explore settlement. Although there were areas of dispute regarding Jenny’s future needs and losses, the parties were able to engage constructively and participate in a joint settlement meeting.

Following negotiations, Jenny’s claim settled for a substantial six-figure sum. The settlement provides financial security for the future and recognises the significant impact the accident has had on Jenny’s life, while ensuring she has access to the support and assistance she may require going forward.
