Trauma resulting from abuse can have really big and lasting effects on an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. Several therapeutic approaches are available to support survivors in their healing journey, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR). This article explores these therapies for adults and other relevant treatments accessible in the UK.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

CBT is a widely used therapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours contributing to emotional distress. Trauma-focused CBT (TF-CBT) is a specialised form designed specifically for treating trauma in children and adolescents, though it can be adapted for adults. TF-CBT combines cognitive-behavioural principles with trauma-sensitive interventions, making it highly effective for young trauma survivors.

By working with a therapist, children learn coping strategies, identify triggers, and develop healthy ways of managing emotions. CBT is particularly effective for children suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, or depression resulting from trauma.

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a structured therapy that helps individuals process and integrate traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones. This approach aims to reduce the distress associated with traumatic memories by facilitating the brain’s natural healing processes. EMDR has been extensively researched and is particularly effective for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions.

Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)

DBT combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness practices to help individuals manage intense emotions and reduce self-destructive behaviours. It is effective for individuals with severe trauma-related symptoms, including those with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This treatment includes individual therapy, skills training, and phone coaching to help clients practice skills in real-time.

Narrative therapy

Narrative therapy helps individuals reframe their traumatic experiences by viewing them as stories that can be rewritten. This approach can be empowering, helping individuals gain a sense of control and understanding around their trauma. Treatment involves exploring and reshaping personal narratives, identifying strengths, and developing alternative, more positive stories.

Somatic experiencing

Somatic experiencing focuses on the body’s sensations to process and release trauma. This approach helps restore the body’s natural healing mechanisms, allowing survivors to become more aware and comfortable with their physical experiences, aiding in healing and emotional regulation.

Mindfulness-based interventions

Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, have been found beneficial for trauma recovery. They increase awareness of present-moment experiences, reducing PTSD symptoms and building emotional resilience. Daily mindfulness practice supports the healing process by promoting relaxation and self-awareness.

Innovative approaches

Beyond traditional therapies, innovative approaches are emerging. For instance, I recently read about survivors of child abuse are participating in stand-up comedy courses to process their trauma. This unique method empowers survivors by helping them reclaim power over their trauma through humour.
